Looking for help with the app instead? That's over on Contact and the FAQ.
Sheaf is free and AGPL-3.0, and that isn't going to change. Self-hosting costs you nothing but the machine it runs on, and the hosted instance at app.sheaf.sh is free with open signups.
Running it isn't free for us, though. If Sheaf is useful to you and you're in a position to chip in, it genuinely helps.
What it pays for
Nothing glamorous. Server capacity and object storage for the hosted instance, domains, outbound email, the Apple Developer Program ($99/year) and Google Play registration that keep the mobile apps in their stores, and the backup infrastructure described in the Terms §3b.
Money coming in mostly buys the hosted instance more headroom and buys us more time to work on Sheaf.
What it does not buy
It does not buy features. Sponsorship doesn't come with a vote on the roadmap, priority on your bug, or influence over what gets built. We'd rather say that plainly up front than have anyone donate expecting something they won't get.
It does not gate anything. There's no paid tier today. If that changes, it'll be to fund running the service, and the free tier will stay genuinely usable rather than becoming a trial. Core features will never move behind a paywall.
It does not buy your data any special treatment. Sponsors get the same privacy posture as everyone else.
Other ways to help
Most of what Sheaf needs isn't money.
Report bugs
A clear reproduction is worth a lot. So is telling us when something is merely confusing rather than broken.
Improve the docs
Docs live in the main repo.
If something took you three attempts to understand, that's a docs bug, and you're the best-placed person to fix it.
Tell people
Word of mouth does the heavy lifting.
A lot of systems looking for somewhere to land after SimplyPlural still don't know Sheaf exists.
